Senior Medical Officer at the Mandeville Regional Hospital in Manchester, Dr Everton McIntosh, confirmed to our news centre that the sick Nigerian man at the hospital today had a case of food poisoning. McIntosh says the man was treated and later released. He admitted that the man's presence at the hospital caused panic among health and medical personnel, but said that's understandable given the fears about the threat of the Ebola virus.

             Abuja – The Coordinator, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi, said more than 600 Nigerians registered as volunteers in the international team to control Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa. He made the disclosure while fielding questions at the 2014 ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.                He said the volunteers comprised health workers, journalists and others. Nasidi said Nigeria remained committed to supporting the control of Ebola spread in West Africa, hence the number of volunteers registered to join the fight against the disease. Panic set in at the Mandeville Regional Hospital in Manchester yesterday (Saturday 18 OCTOBER 2014) after a Nigerian man turned up there with a fever and was vomiting profusely. It triggered fears among health workers and scores of residents in the Mandeville area that the deadly Ebola virus had turned up in Jamaica. However, The Gleaner-Power 106 News Centre understands that checks later revealed that the Nigerian man resides in Jamaica, but had travelled to his homeland in August. A medical source close to the incident noted that this was well outside of the 21-day incubation period and he did not have a fever. According to AIT TV station, The National Universities Commission, NUC, has shut down nine universities in Nigeria for operating without legal licenses. The publication of the affected institutions was published in the NUC weekly bulletin. Report says the Prof. Julius Okojie, the NUC’s executive secretary, signed the publication. The defunct Plantashun Boiz group, made up of 2face, Black face, and Faze – are reportedly working on a new collaborative track. The group, which was Nigeria’s most popular music group between 1998 and 2003, released a début album ‘body and soul’ before disbanding, only to reunite in 2007 to push out another record, ‘Plan-B’. 35 year old Bright Asiruwa has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Benin city High Court for defiling an 11yr old primary school pupil in 2007 at Osazuwa Primary School in Ehor, Uhunmwode LGA of Edo state, while he was a teacher in the school. PM News reports that the case against the convicted rapist started at an Abudu High Court in 2008 and then finally moved to the Benin City High court where the presiding judge, Justice G. O. Imadegbelo, after examining all evidence brought against him, pronounced him guilty of rape and then sentenced him to life imprisonment.
